Angelica Rivera

I believe that places of hardship can become stepping stones towards our full potential where most people believe they are tombstones of anguish. They are places that are ripe for self-discovery, learning new ways of living and a unique place of connection with those around us.  I believe the client is the expert of their issues, and I am a visitor to their internal world. We will walk together towards those uncomfortable places transforming the internal scenery as we process. Empowerment, nonjudgmental listening, and curiosity will be keys to healing in our sessions.

I work with children, teens, adults, couples and families in transition, through crisis and trauma, grief/loss, identity issues, career, anxiety, and depression.  I come from a family of helping professionals.  I have mentored young adults, and I have worked with children, families and teens as a youth and children’s minister.  I am trauma-informed and multi-culturally trained.

I specialize in trauma, grief and loss.  I am also a Certified Trauma Professional. I have also gone through Trust Based Relational Intervention for caregivers to help children who have gone through repeated abuse/neglect and helping their parents/adopted parents navigate healthy relationships with them. 

I have a double major in Christianity and Psychology from Houston Baptist University, graduating in 2012. Post Bachelors, I went to the Houston Graduate School of Theology where I received my Masters in Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy and my Doctorate of Professional Counseling specializing in Trauma, Grief and Loss.

My interests include all things coffee (I was a barista for over 5 years while in school), meaningful themes in books and movies, Star Trek and weight lifting. I play the piano, electric guitar and love 80’s cover songs. In my spare time I like playing with my two cats: Picard and Beverly, rollerskating, and watching bingeable T.V. comedy shows.
