I have been working in the mental health field for over 15 years in various capacities, including working at a psychiatric hospital, inpatient substance abuse treatment facility, university counseling center, non-profit organization, crisis hotline, private practice, and a community mental health center.
I have experience working with a wide variety of life problems and mental health disorders, but my primary interests include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), academic issues, panic/phobias, anger management, addiction, couples, marriage, and family relationship issues.
Depression and anxiety are two of the most commonly diagnosed psychological disorders. I have extensive experience treating both using cognitive-behavioral techniques. Although each case is different, most clients find these techniques to be quick and efficient at treating depression and anxiety.
With regards to bipolar disorder, there are different types, therefore it is important to receive an accurate diagnosis, which will in turn determine the best treatment plan. I use psychological testing to help identify bipolar disorder and guide treatment. I am also very knowledgeable about the medications used to treat bipolar disorder and will provide referrals to psychiatrists if needed or desired.
I have had extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders, and even completed my doctoral dissertation on the treatment of substance use disorders. As a certified Matrix Model supervisor, I often use the Matrix Model to provide individual, group, and family educational sessions. I can also assist in finding a detox facility and/or support groups.
Although there are many different dynamics of counseling, I place emphasis on creating and developing a trusting therapeutic relationship and environment that is conducive to personal growth and insight. I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to assist clients in identifying and resolving maladaptive thoughts and behaviors. I also believe in the importance of a spiritual component to therapy and work to meet you where you are in your spiritual journey.
I work with various life problems and psychological disorders and utilize traditional talk therapy in conjunction with advanced techniques to work towards powerful and efficient results. I have specialized training in clinical hypnosis through the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, Emotional Transformation Therapy, and the Matrix Model for substance abuse treatment. I am a member of the American Counseling Association, International Association for Addiction & Offender Counseling, Texas Counseling Association, Texas Association of Addiction Professionals, National Association for Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Counselors, and the Association for Assessment & Research in Counseling.
In addition to therapy, I specialize in utilizing psychological testing, including personality, achievement, aptitude, attitude, and intellectual testing, to assist in formulating a diagnosis and determining a course treatment. Specifically, I specialize in utilizing psychological testing to diagnose Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), personality disorders, and academic/intellectual problems. Psychological testing is a simple process for the client and can measure all different types of information and provide important data that I will interpret and discuss with you. Examples of psychological tests I use include the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2, Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-IV, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV, and Beck Depression Inventory-II.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Texas, a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi. I am licensed in Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor. Additionally, I am a Human Services – Board Certified Practitioner. In addition to providing psychotherapy services, I serve as an expert witness in both district and federal court systems.
I am married, and we have two dogs. Outside of work, I enjoy serving at church, playing tennis, and going on cruises. I also enjoy music and play the drums, guitar, and piano.
